Shields wins first PNC West Penn Open Championship
(8/25/10)
A three-hole
stretch on the back nine at St. Clair Country Club
clinched the 2010 PNC West Penn Open Championship
for Kevin Shields. Shields, the Director of
Instruction at Sewickley Heights Golf Club, eagled
the par-5 14th hole, and birdied the par-3 15th and
par-4 16th in route to a 5-under 67.
“I have always
wanted to win this tournament,” Shields said.
Shields was the
first player to enter. His final round score equaled
the low round of the tournament posted earlier by
David Brown.
Shields finished
at 7-under 137 to capture his first Open title by 2
shots over Rob McClellan. McClellan, who recently
made his first appearance in a major at the PGA
Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler,
Wisconsin, birdied the final hole to post 5-under
139 and claim runner-up honors alone. (more) |

Rachel Rohanna co-medalist in USGA Women's Amateur
(08/11/10)
A roller coaster final nine that included three
sixes and four birdies, one on the final hole,
placed Waynesburg's Rachel Rohanna in a tie for
co-medalist in the USGA Women's Amateur Championship
at Charlotte Country Club. Her 65-73--138 tied her
with Jacylyn Sweeney, Andover, MA, and Erynne Lee,
Silverdale, WA. Sweeney, an Arizona State University
standout playing in her final amateur competition,
took the lead with a birdie on the 35th hole but
bogeyed the last to fall into a tie with Lee and
Rohanna. All three receive gold medals, the first
three-way tie in Women's Amateur history. Rohanna's
65 is the lowest 18-hole score in Women's Amateur
history. Rohanna played three straight holes in five
over par, then made four birdies in her last seven
to work her way back to the top of the field. (more) |
